Can You Start Your Quilt Shop With No Money?
The answer is "NO".
If you are serious about starting your own quilt shop, you would
need certain sum of initial capital in order to get started.
As a minimum, you need to set aside money for the following items:
Opening of checking account and business registration
To
run a "legal business", you would be required to register your quilt
business with the relevant local regulatory bodies. It is
important to register your business as you would be entitled to claim
tax deduction for expenses incurred such as purchase of quilt products
fo resale and operating expenditures incurred in relation to your
business. But to claim your tax deduction, you need to have your txa ID.
Besides, you would also be required to open a
checking account specifically for your business. All these would
probably cost you few hundred dollars depending on how much is your
initial deposit of your checking account.
Purchase of quilt products
To
start your business, you need to keep enough stock of quilt products
for sale. Even if you are able to make your own quilts for resale,
you would still need to have material supplies in order for you to
produce quilt products.
However, it is important that you
do not overstock your supplies of materials particularly when you are
starting out. This is to avoid cash flow constraint.
Promotional materials
Marketing
is part and parce of every business. So, you would need to
prepare basic promotional materials such as brochures, your name cards
and probably some sample of your quilt products. There are
various ways that you can promote yoru products, try to be creative in
terms of marketing especially when you are on shoestring budget.
So, do
your maths and you will find that the start up capital required for you
to start your own quilt shop is very little compared to that of other
types of business. And don't forget, you have the option of starting
the business part time!
